Description

This building, located 10 metres west of the Langport Arms Hotel, is a house that now serves as solicitors' offices. It dates from the mid-18th century and is constructed from local lias stone with cut and squared Ham stone dressings. The roof is a Welsh slate Mansard style, featuring stepped coped gables and rendered brick chimney stacks.

The house has two storeys and consists of six bays. Notable architectural features include a plinth, a band course between the floors, a moulded eaves course, and rusticated quoins. The windows are 12-pane sash types set in architraved surrounds, with the upper windows having segmental arched heads. Some of the window panes are made of crown glass, although the windows in the first and second upper bays have had their glazing bars removed.

A wide eight-panelled door is located in bay six, framed by an architrave with a keystone. Above this door is a stone plaque that reads: 'Walter Bagehot/was born in this house/February 3rd 1826/He died at Herds Hill/March 24th 1877'. Walter Bagehot was a well-known author, economist, and critic, and his monument can be found in the churchyard of the Church of All Saints in Langport.
