Description
The Town Hall, built in 1732/33, serves as both a town and market hall. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring Ham stone ashlar and dressings, topped with a hipped pyramidal Welsh slate roof and a timber bell turret. The building has two storeys and three bays, with an open arcade for the covered market below. This arcade is entirely ashlar and includes semi-circular arches supported by square columns and end piers, with moulded imposts and keystoned architraves. A band course runs across the arcade, and the brickwork is accented by rusticated stone quoins and a moulded stone eaves course. The first floor features 12-pane sash windows set in architraved surrounds with keystoned flat arches and console-bracketed cills. Above the central window, there is a projecting clock, and a lead stackhead from the 19th century is located on the right. The arches have ironwork grilles and gates. Inside, the undercroft contains two central Doric stone columns, and the rear wall features corresponding arches with two pairs of fielded panel gates and overthrows. The Town Hall was erected on a loan from the Portreeve in 1732, with the date 1733 marked on the weathervane. A strong-room was added, and the kitchen was improved in 1836. After the dissolution of the Corporation in 1886, the hall was used for local functions and is currently maintained by the Langport Town Trust. The term "Club" refers to its temporary usage by the Royal British Legion, which has since moved next door.
