Description
Virginia House is a detached house with origins in the 17th century, significantly altered in the 18th century. It is constructed of local lias stone, squared and cut, with dressings of Ham stone, and has a Welsh slate roof with coped gables. Brick and stone chimney stacks are present. The west elevation, which faces the road, is two storeys with an attic, and features three bays. It has sash windows with 12 panes, set in plain openings; the lower windows have voussoired flat heads. A part-glazed door is located in the second bay, with a stone architrave and a pedimented hood supported by console brackets. A flat-roofed dormer window sits above the second bay. A single-storey extension is attached to the north-west corner. The south gable, which faces the street, features a composite 4+12+4 pane sash window under a brick, segmentally arched head, with a matching window above under a flat head. Both are set between pronounced straight joints. A 12-pane sash window is visible in the gable. A tall wall with pitched coping links the house to Langport Stores, and includes a reset pedimented stone doorhood on console brackets above an opening. Inside, there is an elegant divided staircase, likely from the late 18th century, and some early roof timbers are visible. Railings of square rods, with alternate barbed spearpoints and collared points on a low stone base, are attached to the south-west corner, along with two gates, one likely from the late 18th century, with oval and scroll decorations.
