Description

Langport Stores and Chemist is a building dating from the 18th century, with modifications from the 19th century. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, with Ham stone dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has a shallow pitch between stepped coped gables, with brick chimney stacks at each end. The building stands three storeys tall and features five bays. There is a moulded eaves course in timber that conceals a hidden gutter. The ground floor has early 20th-century shop fronts, which include three windows with recessed glazed doors between fluted Corinthian pilasters at the ends, and there is no true fascia. On the first floor, the third bay has a plain sash window set in a segmental arched architraved surround, while the outer pairs of bays have been modified to include large angled oriel windows made of timber, topped with hipped lead roofs. The second floor features architraved surrounds for late 20th-century replacements of 9-pane sash windows. The interiors have not been seen. This building is primarily noted for its group value within the streetscape and for completing a row of buildings.
