Description
The Old Market House Tea Shop is a house that has been converted into a restaurant, dating from the earlier part of the 18th century. The building is rendered with Ham stone dressings and is colourwashed, featuring a plain clay tiled roof supported by abutments and brick chimney stacks at the rear. It is two storeys high and has three bays. The exterior includes rusticated quoins, a thin string course between the floors, and coved eaves moulding.
The upper level has 12-paned sash windows set within architraves that have keystoned segmental arched heads. The doorway in the second bay matches these windows and features a 6-panelled door with a glazed toplight. The first bay has a composite sash window with a configuration of 2+6+2 panes, likely from the early 20th century, while the third bay has a somewhat earlier composite sash window with 3+9+3 panes, both in plain openings. There are a few 18th-century fittings on the ground floor, but the premises were not fully inspected. At the time of the last survey in 1952/1959, the building was functioning as an inn.
