Description

Hardistys is a house dated 1702 with late 19th-century alterations, located on the south side of Main Street in Langbar. The building is constructed of coursed gritstone rubble and well-dressed gritstone blocks, which are whitewashed, and it features a graduated stone slate roof. It appears to have two phases of construction: the main block is two-storey and two-bay with a lobby-entrance plan, built in well-tooled stone, while there is a one-bay addition to the right made of poorer stone.

The main block has a central 20th-century panelled door set in an architrave, with a plaque inscribed "H G A". To the right of the door, there is an inserted doorway that has been reduced to a window. The original windows from 1702 flanking the central door include a two-light flat-faced mullion window on the left and a tall former sash window on the right, which now has a 20th-century casement. On the first floor, there is a central small oval light, possibly with original lead cames, to the left is a narrow single light that may have been a reduced two-light window from the ground floor, and to the right is the former sash window as seen on the ground floor. The left side features a shaped kneeler and gable coping, along with a large ridge stack above the entrance.

The right bay has a small oval window above and three-light flat-faced mullion windows on both the ground and first floors, with the mullions slightly recessed. This side also has shaped kneeler and gable coping, along with a ridge stack to the right. The interior has not been inspected during the resurvey.
