Description

This is a barn located 30 metres south west of Abbey Reredorter, possibly dating from the 17th century. It is constructed from local lias stone that is cut and squared, and it features a double Roman clay tile roof with stepped coped gables. The barn is single-storey and consists of six bays. The north side has modern openings, likely from the 20th century, except at the west end, which has a 17th-century boarded door set in a very heavy frame. Inside, there are curved collar and tie-beam roof trusses, with one truss retaining fragments of wattle and daub partitioning. Along the south side, there is a lean-to with a catslide roof that includes three small openings with timber lintels and boarded doors with heavy frames. The west gable has two added raking buttresses. This barn has significant group value with the surviving buildings of Muchelney Abbey.
