Description

The Old School House is a former village school, dating from 1871-2, with extensions added in 1878 and 1883. It is constructed of local lias stone with Ham stone dressings, and has a plain clay tile roof with coped gables, finials, saw-tooth ridge tiles, and stone chimney stacks. The building is arranged in an 'L' shape with a single storey and attic, and features a four-bay east elevation. Bays 1 and 4 have four-light mullioned windows with square labels. Bay 2 contains a four-light mullioned and transomed traceried window, designed to resemble a 15th-century "solar" window, also with a label. A moulded, pointed arched doorway with a label and boarded door is located in bay 3. The south gable features a bell-turret in the southwest corner, which has a four-light mullioned and transomed traceried window under a square label and relieving arch. A western extension has a catslide roof and later style details. The school opened in early 1872, built by the Lord of the Manor as the Parochial School. It closed in 1960 and was subsequently converted. The interior was not inspected for the listing.
