Description
The Monks' Reredorter at Muchelney Abbey is a structure that likely dates back to the 13th century and originally served as a reredorter for the Benedictine Abbey. It is constructed from local lias stone with Ham stone quoins and features a half hipped thatched roof. The building is raised to a single storey.
The entrance is located on the north side, accessed by a 20th-century flight of stone steps leading to a modern door, which is set beneath a timber weatherboarded half gable. On the south gable, there is a pointed arched chamfered doorway below and a single lancet window above. The west wall displays a low arcade of five pointed arches, although a section of the upper wall has been rebuilt. A 20th-century lean-to has been added against the east wall, which includes barn-type ventilation slits. The roof frame has also been modernized.
The building is under the guardianship of the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument in Somerset County.
