Description

The Old Toll House is a former toll house dating from the late 18th or early 19th century. It is constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a colourwashed exterior and a hipped roof covered in Welsh slate. A large brick chimney stack occupies the centre of the roof. The building is in a 'T' shape, with a single-storey, three-bay road-facing elevation. The central bay projects forward with a chamfered shape. Pointed arched windows with a 'Y' traceried design are found on each facet of the main elevation, except for the centre of the projection, which contains a doorway with a panelled lower half and matching glazing above, also within a pointed arch. The interior remains unseen. The road serving the toll house was taken over by the Langport, Somerton and Castle Cary Trust in 1792, and the building was likely constructed shortly thereafter.
