Description
This barn, located 60 meters southwest of Coggeshall Abbey, dates from the late 16th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of corrugated asbestos. The structure has five bays oriented from west-northwest to east-southeast, and features a midstrey on the north-northeast side. Originally built with two aisles, the southern aisle has been demolished. The western end has a gablet hip.
The barn includes jowled posts and heavy studding; however, some of the studding at the eastern end has been replaced with 17th-century oak studding that has primary straight bracing. Two bays of the northern aisle wall, west of the midstrey, and the aisle rafters above have been rebuilt using softwood. The barn features straight arcade braces and edge-halved and bridled scarfs in the arcade plates. The internal tiebeam nearest to the western end is missing, while the original arched braces to the internal tiebeam nearest to the eastern end remain, with the others replaced by bolted knees. The roof has clasped purlins, and there is a vehicle door at the western end.
