Description
This barn, located approximately 50 metres east-south-east of Nichol's Farmhouse, dates from the late 16th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of corrugated asbestos. The structure consists of three bays aligned northwest-southeast, featuring two aisles and a midstrey to the southwest.
The barn has jowled posts and heavy studding with straight bracing that is trenched to the inside. The original arched braces to the tiebeams have been replaced by bolted knees. It has a clasped purlin roof with tiebeams and collars at half-bay intervals, along with arched wind-bracing. Large double doors have been inserted at the southeast end.
Some elements of the barn show early features suggesting it has been rebuilt from a 13th-century barn. The northeast arcade plate displays a splayed and undersquinted scarf, while other areas feature face-halved and bladed scarfs. One unjowled arcade post includes an oblique trench for a passing brace. The original wattle and daub infill remains in the midstrey.
