Description

Ewen Bridge Farmhouse is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It is timber framed and plastered, with the framing exposed, and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The farmhouse features a three-bay main range facing east, a three-bay crosswing to the left, and an internal stack at the junction of the two sections. There is an 18th or 19th-century internal stack at the right end of the main range. The building has two storeys. On the ground floor, there is one 20th-century casement window, one 20th-century splayed bay window, and one early 19th-century sash window with 16 lights. The first floor has three early 19th-century sash windows with 12 lights each and one with 16 lights. The entrance features an early 19th-century half-glazed door set in a gabled porch. The crosswing has a jettied front that is underbuilt, with a bracket exposed on the left side, and there is another gabled porch on the left return wall. An interior inspection was refused in October 1984. According to the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, there is a moulded beam in the middle room of the ground floor, fragments of re-used 16th-century panelling, and an original roof featuring collar-beams, principals, and wind-braces, which is dated to the early 16th century. The name Ewen Bridge is believed to come from early documents that predate the iron footbridge located 150 meters to the northeast.
