Description

Wade's Gardens is a house that has been divided into two residences. It dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 17th and 20th centuries. The building is timber framed and roughcast rendered, topped with handmade red clay tiles. It features a three-bay crosswing from the 16th century or earlier, alongside a three-bay main range to the left, which is from the early 17th century, facing northeast. There is a 20th-century internal stack at the junction of the two sections, and a 17th or 18th-century axial stack in the main range. At the rear, there are two single-storey extensions. The house is two storeys high, with four 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor and four more on the first floor, along with one oval fixed light. The main stack has recessed panels on each face. Notable features include original sprockets below the eaves of the right return wall and the rear of the main range, as well as jowled posts. The rear bay of the crosswing was originally separated from the rest of the house; this partition has been removed on the ground floor, but some studding remains on the first floor. Inside, there is a cambered tiebeam with two arched braces and an inserted ceiling that does not provide access to the roof. The main range also has chamfered transverse beams with jewel stops.
