Description

Abbot's Hall is a house dating from the early 19th century, with extensions added in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is constructed of gault brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with slate roofs. The house follows a double pile plan facing northwest, and features side stacks. A large service wing is situated to the right, slightly projecting from the main facade, with an internal stack built in 1879. To the left is a square ballroom extension, also set slightly forward, completed in 1920. Single-storey extensions to the right and rear were added around 1880. The main range and ballroom extension are two storeys high, while the service wing is three storeys high.

The original northwest facade features a five-window range of 12-light sash windows with flat brick arches. The service wing has a three-window range of sash windows, of various types. The ballroom extension presents a two-window range of 12-light sash windows. A central entrance features double doors with a flat overlight, sheltered by a Greek Doric portico. Each section of the house is individually roofed with low-pitched, hipped roofs; the original house has long projecting eaves with panelled soffits.

The southeast (garden) elevation has four pairs of French windows with original louvred shutters, and a wrought iron canopy with a glass roof. Rainwater heads on the service wing are dated 1879.

The entrance hall retains the original floor of stone flags with a diaper design in slate. It contains two semi-elliptical arches with panelled soffits and the original side door, now leading to the service wing, with a semi-elliptical fanlight and radial tracery. The original staircase has stone treads with scrolled ends, cast iron balusters, and a mahogany wreathed handrail. Throughout the house are original six-panel doors, some with reeded architraves, folding shutters and original skirtings.
