Description
The barn to the north of Abbey Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed structure dating from the late 13th century or early 14th century, with some elements from the 15th century. It features a timber-framed construction, with 20th-century brick walls and a corrugated iron roof that replaced the original thatch. The barn consists of eight aisled bays running from east to west. The first four trusses from the west and the first three bays appear to be largely intact.
The posts are unjowelled, and one truss shows a reversed assembly. It includes notched-lapped and tenoned braces, as well as passing braces connecting the tie beam to the arcade posts and aisle posts. Above the tie beam, queen posts connect to the collar and are braced to the purlins, with additional notched-lapped and tenoned passing braces from the collar to the tie beam. The aisle plates feature splayed joggled joints under squinted butt scarf joints.
There is evidence of an intermediate rail that has been removed between the posts of the central bay, which may indicate an original opening. In the 15th century, the barn was extended by adding five trusses and four bays, featuring a queen strut roof and conventional framing with parallel braces connecting the arcade posts to the aisle tie and sill. The face halfed scarf joints may suggest later repairs or alterations.
