Description

Padcot is a cottage that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates back to around 1500, with alterations made in the early 17th century and the 19th century. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, featuring thatched roofs along with a plain tiled gabled dormer window and a main roof. There is a 19th-century gault brick ridge stack at the angle and a 20th-century brick plinth. The building is one storey with an attic, originally designed as a two-bayed aisled hall, and has a two-storeyed two-bayed cross wing on the left side.

There are two entrances with plank doors, one of which has a cambered head leading into the cross wing. The cross wing displays solid curved jetty brackets and exposed joists, along with the remains of an original window below an oriel. The cottage features five windows of various sizes with glazing bars, including a large oriel window in the hall range, one three-light casement window on the first floor, and one casement dormer window.

Inside, the open hall has a tie beam and arcade plates that are arch-braced to posts made of rough unchamfered timber. There is an inserted 17th-century floor with ogee-stop-chamfers. The cross wing has a crown post roof with cambered tie beams originally braced to jowelled posts, and there is evidence of a first-floor gable window.
