Description

Abbey Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to the medieval period, with a core from the 13th century and alterations and additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of clunch rubble, timber framing with plaster, and brick, topped with plain tiled roofs that create an M profile gable on the main range. The building features a rectangular stack and two rear stacks, and it has two storeys and attics with a double pile plan, which is an addition to the original 13th-century structure that includes rear gabled extensions.

The facade is symmetrical with three 'bays' and includes a central flat-roofed Tuscan portico, a six-panelled door with side lights and an overlight. There are two casement windows with transoms on the ground floor and three on the first floor. Inside, there are two flights of 17th-century balustered closed string staircases and stop-chamfered ceiling beams from the same period. There are also 19th and 20th-century details present. A 15th-century ogee-chamfered tie beam with mortices for wall posts and braces can be found on the first floor. A 13th-century doorway, noted in a 1949 report, is now sealed. The interior features a large hearth with ingle nooks and niches that has been partly relined from the 17th century, while other hearths have been sealed or demolished. The window jambs and doors throughout the original building have deep splays.
