Description

This is a 13th-century aisled barn located approximately 60 meters north-west of Abbey Farmhouse. It is constructed with a timber frame and weatherboarding, featuring a main roof covered with pantiles and corrugated sheeting over the aisles. The roof was renewed around 1960 and now has a mansard shape. The barn consists of seven bays, with the two at the west end being a later addition that incorporates reused timbers. The original entrance is located on the north side, in the third bay from the east end.

The main posts of the barn have jowled heads and are intentionally angled inward. Their bases rest on low timber balks, which may be secondary supports; the first post from the eastern end in the northern arcade appears to be set directly into the ground. The trusses feature a pair of straight braces and a pair of passing braces, which are morticed into the tie-beam and are trenched across the main posts and the side-ties to the aisles. Many of these braces have been replaced with bolted knees. The braces connecting the posts to the arcade plates are numbered from 1 to 10. Each wallplate has a stop splayed scarfing joint with sallied butts and a key, similar to those found in the barn at Great Coxwell, Berkshire. The main frame is assembled in a standard manner, while the aisles show reversed assembly, although the aisle walls have largely been rebuilt using sections of older wall plates.
