Description
This substantial 17th-century barn, located southwest of Penhow Castle, features seven bays and a steeply pitched gabled roof covered with pantiles. The elevations are constructed from local rubblestone, showing traces of limewashing. There is a single-storey lean-to on the south elevation and an open-sided gabled cartshed attached to the west end. The barn is cut into a bankside at the east end. The south elevation includes a substantial rubble buttress at the west end and paired ventilation slots in the first and second bays. The third bay has a full-height opening fitted with modern sliding doors. A 19th-century lean-to obscures the remaining four bays to the east, which are open on the west side and feature two former doorways with redbrick dressings that are now blocked. A large rectangular opening is set high on the east gable, framed with heavy timber and fitted with a shutter. The north elevation is obscured by a large portal framed barn. Inside, the barn retains its original 17th-century pegged and trussed oak roof structure, which lacks collars and includes three purlins and a ridge beam with struts between the ties and principal rafters. The third bay has a flagged threshing floor, and there was formerly an external doorway within the lean-to in the fifth bay.
