Description
The Stone Barn at Great Stonedge Farm is an aisled barn dating from the 17th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from coursed squared rubble sandstone and features quoins, topped with a stone slated roof laid to diminishing courses.
The north elevation presents a five-bay, single-storey structure with a shallow central porch that houses full-height vertically-planked double doors. On either side of the doorway, there are two tiers of blocked vents in the wall. To the right, there is a blocked single doorway with a massive surround and a 20th-century inserted window above it. The central bay on the left has a doorway with a small window opening to its right. The east gable includes blocked vents and a wide central opening that has been partially blocked and reduced in size to form a single opening, flanked by blocked ground floor openings. The former loft door in the gable apex now features a 20th-century frame.
Inside, the barn retains an aisled timber-framed structure, with jowelled aisle posts that support arcade plates and tie beams, along with longitudinal and lateral bracing. The aisle posts carry king post trusses, which have longitudinal braces supporting the ridge purlin and angled struts to the principal rafters that support double side purlins. There is an inserted loft and an access stair at the east end. This barn is substantial and has seen little alteration, preserving its complete internal timber-framed structure.
