Description

Lock number 46 on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was built in 1794 and designed by engineer Robert Whitworth. It is constructed from furrowed dressed stone. The retaining walls are rebated to accommodate two pairs of wooden gates, which curve slightly outward at the upper end and follow a quadrant shape as they slope down at the lower end.
