Description

Lock number 49 on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was built in 1794 and designed by engineer Robert Whitworth. It is constructed from furrowed dressed stone. The retaining walls are shaped to accommodate two pairs of wooden gates, curving slightly at the upper end and forming quadrants as they slope down at the lower end. There are also stone steps alongside for the use of man and horse.
