Description

Lock number 51 on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was built in 1794 and designed by engineer Robert Whitworth. It is constructed from punched dressed stone. The retaining walls are rebated to accommodate two pairs of gates, which are now made of steel. The walls curve slightly outward at the upper end and follow quadrants as they slope down at the lower end.
