Description
The Swinden Aqueduct is an aqueduct that carries the Leeds and Liverpool Canal over the Colne water, likely built around 1795 and designed by engineer Robert Whitworth. It is constructed from dressed stone, which shows pitting on the faces of the arches and is punched on the parapet. The structure features two elliptical arches, which are separated only on the south side by a bull-nosed, domed cutwater. The face of the abutments on each side curves slightly and ends in a pier. Above the arches, there is a band followed by a parapet, which is interrupted by another band and curves gradually from one pier to the other, standing behind the line of the arches.
