Description

Lesser Barn is a seven-bay barn dating from the 17th century. It was originally the southern end of the Great Barn but was separated from it due to a fire in the 19th century. The barn features a steeply pitched, gabled roof covered with slate. The west elevation is rendered, while the south gable has areas of exposed coursed stone rubble and pebbles. The north gable is constructed of brick, a result of the fire in the 19th century. The east elevation is obscured by a 19th-century lean-to outshut made of brick. There is a cobbled forecourt to the west.

The front (west) elevation includes a central full-height doorway with boarded doors and exposed lintels. On either side of the doorway are two ventilation slots at mid-height, each equipped with a timber shutter. There are also single square shuttered openings beneath the eaves on both sides of the main doorway. The north gable, made of 19th-century brickwork, has two shuttered ventilation slots at ground floor level. The south gable features a single high opening, with two vertically aligned 19th-century loft doors below it, flanked by ventilation slots at mid-height. Beneath these are two wider shuttered ventilation slots. The rear (east) elevation has a 19th-century brick outshut with four doorways at the southern end, including a double cart doorway with a brick arch on the right side and additional doorways further to the right.

The interior is unpartitioned, with a hay loft at the north end and evidence of a hay loft at the south end. The walls are made of limewashed rubble, and the original 17th-century roof structure consists of pegged 'A' frames, each featuring three sets of trenched purlins.
