Description
Great Barn is a large 17th-century estate barn that was partially destroyed by fire at the south end in the 19th century. Originally, it was notable for its extreme length. The barn's exterior features elevations made of coursed rubble and a gabled roof covered with slate. The front (west) elevation has a pronounced batter at the base. There is a centrally located full-height doorway with double boarded doors, and a stable door at the north end with a small rectangular window to its right. Beneath the eaves, there are two small ventilation slots. To the south of the main doorway, there is another single door, with three-quarter height double doors to the right and an additional doorway that has a shuttered hayloft opening above. The extreme south end has two shuttered rectangular openings positioned at mid-height. The south gable is made of 19th-century brick and features four asymmetrically arranged 19th-century timber casements of varying sizes. The rear elevation shows partial limewashing and has regularly spaced ventilator slots at mid-height, which are now blocked. There is a large opening with a timber lintel at the north end, which has been partially infilled with later rubble masonry and includes a smaller boarded door. The north gable is constructed of coursed rubblestone and is blind.
Inside, the barn has been substantially partitioned to create various storage areas, with lofts above.
