Description
The building is an L-shaped, single-storey byre range located to the far southwest of Penhow Castle. It encloses a cobbled yard to the north of the stable block. The northern range was built in the early 19th century and was originally open-fronted to the south, supported by conical rubble piers, which are now blocked. It features three stable doors with pent roofs and a central window. There is a blocked doorway on the eastern gable facing the road, which has a high set, narrow glazed window beneath a timber lintel. At the rear, there is a projecting hipped range, possibly a horse-engine house, with a slate roof and a single doorway and window on the eastern side. The eastern corner of this range is canted beneath a hipped roof. Attached to the west is a later single-storey range from the mid-19th century, which serves as a four-bay cartshed. This range is obliquely joined to the northern range at the western corner of the yard and features a Roman tiled, gabled roof, with four large openings facing the yard and redbrick dressings around the openings.
