Description

Southernhay is a detached house built around 1840. It has a rendered exterior and a Welsh slate roof with large overhangs on plain gables, along with brick chimney stacks at each end. The house is two storeys high and has three bays, featuring plain pilasters for each bay, which are doubled at the corners. There are cill and head course bands, and on the first floor, there are 12-pane sash windows in plain openings. The central entrance has a 4-panelled door topped with a rectangular fanlight that features heavy Chippendale style glazing.

To the west, there is a garage extension with a triple clay tiled roof, and to the east, there is a later link wing leading to a stable gateway with an arch and a yard that contains outbuildings, which are not of special interest. The interior has not been seen.

The front boundary railings are located to the south and are attached to the southwest corner of the house. They are made of wrought iron, featuring twisted spear-points and anthemion cast finials on curve-braced standards. These railings match those of the Pound enclosure to the south and contribute to the streetscape value.
