Description

The French House, with front boundary railings, is a house in a row dating from the 18th century, with modifications from the 19th century. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond and has a colourwashed, rendered addition at the front. The roof is a Welsh slate Mansard style, featuring stepped coped gables and brick chimney stacks. The building has two storeys with an attic and consists of three bays. It has a Lias stone plinth and margined 12-pane sash windows on the ground floor projection, with an 8-pane sash window in the return. Above, there are 12-pane sash windows, and a small flat-roofed dormer is located over the third bay. A pitched roof covers a balcony supported by a timber framework, which has 20th-century wrought iron balustrading. The central feature is a semi-circular arched recess that leads up three steps to a six-panelled door beneath a Regency pattern cast iron fanlight. The interior has not been seen. In front of the house, there are wrought iron square railings with collared points, set on a low stone wall, and cast iron finials on the standards. The matching gates have double curved braces. These railings not only enhance the setting of the house but are also significant to the streetscape. The name "The French House" is a late 20th-century reference to a former owner.
