Description

Egwood House is a detached house built around 1820, with modifications made around 1911. It is constructed from Ham stone ashlar and features Welsh slate roofs, hipped on the main block but with some coped gables, and has ashlar chimney stacks. The house is two storeys high, with a north entrance elevation that has four bays. The first bay projects and is hipped at both ends, featuring a projecting chimney stack with offsets and a hollow-chamfered mullioned window in a chamfered recess with a label, consisting of three lights. The second bay is recessed and has a wide gable topped with a ball finial, a three-light mullioned window on the first floor, and a two-light ground floor window to the left that matches. The central porch is coped and gabled, with a semi-circular open arch leading to a six-panel inner door. The third bay is further set back, featuring a band and eaves course with an end pilaster, and has three-light horizontal-bar casements on both floors, each with voussoired flat arches. The fourth bay includes a projecting single-storey kitchen window with attic space, which has similar casements on the east flank, along with one leaded casement above; the roof has a stone ridge and stone slate base courses. The south elevation has a partially blocked doorway flanked by pilasters and topped with an open pediment, along with transomed chamfered-mullioned windows, and an added two-storey bay from 1911. Inside, there is a mix of features from both around 1820 and from the 1911 modifications and extensions. The estate was likely assembled in the late 18th century.
