Description
Nos 7 and 8 Market Place is a corner block of shops and houses built in the early 19th century. It is constructed from local stone rubble with brick that was formerly rendered. The ground floor features horizontal fantel rustication and a plat band, with a presumed flat roof behind a parapet. The building has three storeys and a nine-bay facade that wraps around the corner, with bay 5 positioned on the curve.
There is a plinth and cornice, with keyed rendered surrounds and keystones above 12-pane sash windows on the first floor, and 3-pane sash windows on the second floor. The ground floor includes a wide 6-pane bay window set into a 19th-century shopfront with simple wooden pilasters and fascia. There is a blank bay 3, and an early 20th-century shopfront with plain windows and central recessed doors spanning bays 4 to 6. Bay 8 has a plain window, while bay 9 features a 12-pane sash window in a segmental arched opening.
Bays 2, 7, and the space between bays 8 and 9 have elaborate doorways with 4-panel doors and 3-pane fanlights, set into timber panelled recesses flanked by Tuscan pilasters with entablatures and flat hoods. The interiors have not been seen. This building is visually important in the center of town.
