Description
Nos 16 and 17 Market Place are two shops and houses dating from the early 19th century. They are constructed of ashlar stone and are colourwashed, featuring a flat roof behind a shallow parapet. The building has three storeys and six bays, built on a curve. The ground floor includes two double shopfronts; the shopfront for No 16 has 19th-century stone pilasters and a fascia, while No 17's shopfront is quite plain and lacks a fascia. Between these shopfronts, there are plain doorways in bays 3 and 4. The doorway in bay 3 is mutilated, but bay 4 features a six-panel door with a margined fanlight above. At the upper levels, there are 12-pane sash windows set in plain openings, separated by a band course, and topped with an elaborate moulded cornice. The interior has not been seen. This building is visually important in the heart of the town.
