Description
The Bear Inn is an inn that dates back to 1720, although it may have an earlier core. The building has been refronted in the 20th century and features a rendered and colourwashed exterior with a Welsh slate roof that has an abutment to the east and a hip to the west, along with brick chimney stacks. It stands three storeys high and has six bays, with the sixth bay projecting slightly.
The first and second floors have late pattern sash windows in plain openings for bays one to five. The ground floor of bay one features a 16-pane sash window flanked by two 8-pane sashes, followed by double doors with a plain fanlight set in a segmental arch, topped with a mid-20th century metal canopy. Bays three to five also have sash windows in plain openings. Bay six contains a tall and wide semi-circular carriage arch with a plinth, rusticated surround, impost blocks, and a triple keystone. Above this arch is a composite sash window at mezzanine level.
Between bays three and four at the second floor level, there is an oval plaque in a rectangular recess that displays the date 1720. Inside, the public rooms retain significant remnants of timber framing that may predate 1720, although the rest of the interior has not been seen.
