Description
The Red Lion Public House is an 18th-century establishment that has been remodeled. It is constructed from local stone that is cut and squared, topped with a plain clay tile roof featuring a simple gable and abutment, along with a brick chimney stack. The building stands two stories high with an attic and has two bays. It features large four-pane sash windows that are set flush and have moulded timber surrounds, positioned under exposed timber lintels. There is a single-storey bay window with a flat roof on the second bay. Between the windows, there is a simple doorway with a timber lintel, and above it hangs a sign on a wrought iron bracket. A central pitched roof dormer includes a small two-light casement window. The interior has not been seen. The pub has been open as an inn since at least 1794, according to G. Sweetman's history of Wincanton from around 1904.
