Description
Wincanton Post Office is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of local stone with a rendered finish and ashlar dressings, all of which are colourwashed. The building features a plain clay tile roof behind a parapet and stands three stories high with three bays.
The exterior includes 16-pane sash windows, with pairs located in the outer bays of the first and ground floors. The ground floor windows have had their glazing bars removed, and the plain mullions have been replaced with circular cast iron columns. There are no windows in the second bay on the first floor. The central doorway consists of a pair of part-glazed doors under a fanlight, set within an elliptical arch that has a plain surround, impost blocks, and a keystone. The parapet is designed to create an open pediment in the center, which features a blank circular plaque.
The return elevation facing Mill Street has a random arrangement of windows from various periods. The interior has been significantly altered at the ground floor level, while the remainder of the interior has not been seen. The building occupies an important position in the heart of the town.
