Description
Lovington School with adjoining schoolhouse is a building from the early 19th century, constructed of local grey lias stone that is cut and squared, with Doulting stone dressings. It features a Welsh slate roof between stepped coped gables and has brick chimney stacks. The building has a T-plan layout, with the schoolhouse forming the stalk. The roadside elevation is two storeys high and consists of four bays, with the first bay being the gable end of the school.
The windows are mullioned, with two lights and relatively wide horizontal bar casements. The windows in the house have small ovolo moulds, while the ground floor and gable windows have labels. The lower bay one includes a small projecting porch with a stepped coped gable and finial, featuring a moulded four-centred archway leading to boarded doors. The lintel is inscribed with "l-Lovington-16/National School," likely indicating street numbers rather than a date. In the lower bay three, there is a boarded door with a glazed light, sheltered by a timber and slated pitched roof porch hood supported by shaped brackets.
On the north elevation of the schoolroom, there are three two-light chamfered mullioned and transomed windows, which have diamond-glazed cast-iron casements in the upper lights and plain glazed windows below. The interior has not been seen, but the building is still in use as a school as of March 1985.
