WEDMORE CP CHEDDAR ROAD (East side) Grotto and garden wall approximately 20 metres South of frontage of Holdenhurst

GV II

Grotto and garden wall. Early C19. Rubble, dressed stone and tufa. Eccentric gothick style. Grotto enclosed in small rectangular structure with a parapet, pantile roof, pointed arch door opening to West in an ogee-headed plaster surround with a rosette and shell decoration. To left of door opening a tablet with a lyrical poem inscribed. Interior with a ribbed plaster ceiling incorporating sea shells, corbels carved as heads; small quatrefoil window to East with stained glass. Section of rubble wall extending approximately 20 metres to West of South West corner, 3 metres high, plain dressed coping with some tufa "finials"; a traceried design incorporating sea shells, adjacent an inscribed tablet with a pediment; ogee-headed lancet with stained glass (partially decayed at time of re-survey May 1984) forming a window opening.
