Description

The grotto, dating from the 1840s, is located by the lake to the north of Victoria Park House. It features rubble walling made from industrial waste and glass, accented with stone dressings. The central grotto has a blocked entrance and gable, along with flanking blocked windows. To the left, an arch spans the path, leading to a round turret that has battlements on a corbel table adorned with grotesque heads. The keystone displays carvings of birds, and there are remnants of battlements with a pinnacle to the right. Adjacent to the grotto is a round tower with blocked slit windows, which include label moulds, a drip course, and battlements, as well as a corbel table with grotesque heads. The screen wall to the right culminates in another round turret. The walls contain many carved stones, including coats of arms and heraldic symbols.
