Description
The ruins of Windleshaw Abbey, located in the Roman Catholic Cemetery on Abbey Road in St. Helens, date back to around 1453 and include the west tower and parts of the walls of the chantry chapel built by Sir Thomas Gerard. The structure is made of stone and features a pointed entrance and a west window that shows signs of a tracery head, likely designed with three lights. The tower has two-light bell openings with reticulated tracery, although some tracery bars are missing on the south side. Inside, there is a plain chamfered tower arch. The walls, which have been partly reconstructed, support various memorials, including a Celtic-style cross located at the east end.
