Description
The Malthouse is a building said to date from 1777, featuring the initials of William Cross and his wife. It may have originated as an earlier stone barn that was altered and extended in the 18th century. The structure has stone base courses, parts of stone walls, and a stone floor, while the remainder is made of brick. It stands two storeys high with a basement, some brick floors, and a stone flag roof supported by very thick beams. There are blocked round-arched openings and a long round-arched niche for warehouse entrances on two levels. The windows are small and segmental-headed. Inside, the ceilings are very low with exposed beams, except for the top room under the roof. The lower treads of the staircase are made of stone. The building is currently disused. Nos 53 to 59 (odd) form a group with the Malthouse.
