Description
The grotto and icehouse, located at Forcett Park, date from the late 18th century. Constructed from ashlar sandstone, rubble, and brick, the structure features a three-bay grotto with a passage extending approximately 30 metres from the rear of the central bay to a circular brick icehouse that has a deep cavity and a vaulted top. The grotto is made of cyclopian dry-stone masonry, which forms three roundish arches, with the central arch being larger. Behind these arches are three rubble barrel-vaulted chambers, with the central chamber tapering down to create a passage that is approximately 1.75 metres high. Pointed-arched doorways from the outer sides of the outer chambers lead up into the garden behind.
