Description
1A Church Street is a mid-19th century shop and house, designed in a flamboyantly Italianate style. The building is rendered and features a hipped roof covered with fishtail tiles, wide eaves supported by large brackets, and three storeys with three bays. The first and second floors have semi-circular head windows set in deep reveals, with emphasised imposts and fluted heads. An impost band runs along the second floor, while the first floor is adorned with flanking pilasters and prominent corner pilasters that support an entablature and a moulded cornice at the second floor level. The first floor windows have cast-iron glazing bars forming simple tracery, and the second floor features sash windows with glazing bars.
The ground floor has a slightly projecting double shop front with recessed central paired half-glazed doors, pilasters supporting a fascia board, and a moulded cornice. The entire structure is topped by a cast-iron parapet that forms a balcony for the first floor windows, complete with a central projecting flag pole. This building makes a striking contribution to the appearance of the village center.
