Description
The grotto located at the rear of Westcombe Stables is a late 18th-century structure that features a waterfall and is part of an emparked landscape. It is constructed from rubble and tufa, with the main section set into a bank where water flows through the center. On either side of the grotto, there are several rough archways that lead to niches lined with rubble. In front of the grotto, there is an apron with an oblong pool that receives the water from the waterfall, which is surrounded by lias cobbles and walling. Directly opposite the waterfall, there is a romantic pointed archway. This grotto is part of the former park of Westcombe House, which has since been demolished.
