Description
The Westcombe War Memorial is a private memorial originally erected as a village cross in 1913. It was altered in 1916 to serve as a war memorial and underwent further modifications in 1917 and 1918 to commemorate those lost in the First World War.
Constructed from stone, the memorial features an ornate carved cross that stands atop a tall shaft. Below the cross is an octagonal plinth adorned with relief panels, resting on a three-stepped base.
The first inscription is carved into the panels of the plinth, which reads: "TO THE GREATER GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF HENRY ERNST WESTCOMBE AD 1913." Beneath this inscription are the names of parishioners who were killed in the war. Additionally, around the edge of the plinth capping is another inscription that states: "ALSO OF OUR PARISHIONERS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR GOD, KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 TO 1919." Finally, around the top step of the base is an inscription that commemorates the capture of Jerusalem on December 9th, 1917, by General Sir E Allenby.
