Description
The grotto at Frieston House is an early 19th-century structure made of coursed limestone rubble. It features a brick arch with a keystone and a slate roof that has castellations at the rear. The grotto has a wide central brick Rustic arch, flanked by single brick pointed-headed blank niches. The recessed central bay is decorated with pebbles and rock-faced hard stone blocks, arranged horizontally on the splayed reveals and in the shape of a pointed arch on the rear panel. Above, a vault with three compartments, also lined with pebbles and rocks, rises above a brick string course. Inside, there is a wooden bench in the Rustic style. This grotto is included in the listing for its group value only.
