Description

The Old Bakery is a cottage that dates back to the 16th century and was later used as a bakery. It has undergone alterations, including a partial rebuilding of the left gable end when a 19th-century stack was inserted. The building is constructed of red sandstone random rubble with a whitewashed facade. It features a rating buttress on the left gable end and a large stack positioned at the center right. The original plan may have included a lobby entry, but it now consists of three cells with an outshot at the rear and a single-storey addition on the right gable end.

The structure is one and a half storeys tall and has a five-light 19th-century casement window that rises from the eaves above the entrance. There is a ground floor 19th-century casement window to the left of the entrance, a plant door, and another casement window to the right, all under a wooden lintel. The facade has a long unlit section and retains the remains of a 17th-century ovolo moulded mullioned window in the right end bay, along with a plank door leading to the single-storey addition.

On the right return gable end facing the road, there are remains of another moulded mullion casement window in the gable above a lean-to addition. Inside, there is a modern grate for the very large stack on the right, and the building appears to have originally consisted of three cells with three pairs of collar beam trusses and a chamfered beam with stops in the central roof. The Old Bakery served as the local bakery until the 1950s and is said to have previously functioned as an inn or pothouse, featuring a hatch that opened onto the road front gable end, which is now blocked externally.
