Description

Hill Gate Cottage is a cottage dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red sandstone random rubble, with the left side of the entrance rendered. The cottage features a thatched roof that is half hipped to the right, a catslide roof at the rear, and a stepped lateral stack with a tall circular chimney. There is also a slate-roofed bread oven projection to the right of the entrance and a large external stepped stone stack at the left gable end, partially obscured by a double Roman tiled lean-to roofed addition.

The building has a plan consisting of two cells and a cross passage, with a later outshut at the rear. It stands two storeys tall, with the left bay lit only on the ground floor by a 2-light casement window. The recessed central bay features an early 19th-century leaded iron 2-light casement window below the eaves and above the entrance, which is located to the right of the external stack. The right return has a 20th-century 3-light casement window, while the ground floor includes a triple Roman tiled 3-light leaded bay and a 20th-century window in the outshut. The entrance is a studded diagonal plank door situated below a triple Roman pentice porch. The recessed central bay is noted for its picturesque and mystifying appearance.
