Description
Hill Gate Cottage is a cottage that possibly dates back to the 17th century and was enlarged in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of red sandstone random rubble and has a double Roman tiled roof. There is a large stepped lateral stack on the right return, and the roof extends as a catslide on either side, featuring a slate-roofed bread oven projection at the rear. A 20th-century stack rises from the eaves at the back. The plan is likely two cells, with entry from the gable end. The gable end has a weatherboarded apex and features a 2-light casement window above a pantiled pentice porch, along with a plank door. On the right return, there is a 2-light 19th-century window beyond the stack. A 20th-century addition, including a garage, is located on the left return but is not included in the listing. The cottage is primarily listed for its group value with Hill Gate Cottage to the northeast.
