Description

Holnicote is a cottage that likely dates from the late 17th century. It is constructed of cob and rubblestone, topped with a thatched roof featuring brick stacks at the gable ends. The building has a two-unit plan with gable-end stacks and an entrance located against the stack on the right side. It stands two storeys tall and has a two-window range. The windows include two- and three-light leaded casements, with the first-floor windows (located at eaves level) and the one to the left of the door featuring ovolo-moulded mullions. The ground floor has two similar but later windows on the left.

The entrance door, a halved wide-planked design from the 18th century, has wrought-iron hinges and is set within a 17th-century moulded frame that includes double moulded stops. There are 19th and 20th-century windows on the left return, a small leaded window on the first floor of the right return, and a 20th-century rear outshut. Additionally, a small window has been added to allow viewing of the bread oven located in the right return.

Inside, there is an internal stack with a concealed open fire and a bread oven on the right gable end, along with a newel stair on the left. The ground floor features one axial beam, while the first floor showcases exposed massive main rafters and trenched purlins in its three-bay roof.
